三月的约定

转眼间，时间又飞逝了三个月。我，也是时候准备要回到澳洲了。

这三个月，我过得很充实，很忙，虽然也不知忙了些什么。但是，因为有你，我过得很好。三个月里面，美好的事情发生了，也去了好几个旅行，留下了不少足迹与回忆。

而你，我愿你也有了美好的三个月。

这一趟，我将离开十个月。但我不会觉得久。因为我相信，只要好好的经营，十个月，也会一瞬而过。

到底是这里的景色漂亮所以人也特别的友善，还是人友善所以景色也非常的漂亮？

我不知道。

但是这里的人非常友善，景色也非常漂亮。住在这里很舒服。

可能心情好，今天的天特别的蓝，晴空万里，一望无际。

带着疲惫但是轻松的心情，我一个人开车漫游Launceston。感觉不错。一个人毫无目标开车，欣赏沿途的景色，仿佛回到了马来西亚，开着自己的Hyundai，在公路上无忧无虑的奔驰。

在蓝蓝的天空下，自由的心情，是无法以言语表达的。

读了五年的建筑，才走到今天；忙了几星期的作业，才赶剩一个。建筑学，说难它不难，说易它也不易。但是，这个难非难，易非易的专业，我却走了五年。还有一年就完成了大学生涯，时间是过得非常的快，人生，也没有多少个十年。这个科系，就拿了我的六年。

是我精彩的六年，不后悔，没遗憾。

活得精彩，快乐，就是自由的人生了。再多的辛苦，也是值得。

Tulips festival, Wynyard

这已经是我第三次到在Wynyard的郁金香园了。

郁金香盛开于春天，每年的十月都会有盛大的郁金香节日（Tulips Festival）来庆祝郁金香开花。到时这里非常多人，非常热闹。白天欣赏艳花，晚上欣赏烟花,还有个market可以看到许多的食物和节目，可以玩得很开心。

走15分钟可以到另一个沙滩。在这里可以看到小企鹅,也可以烧烤，感觉不错。

在阳光普照下郁金香显得非常出色，艳亮无比。

一排排的郁金香有如百花齐放。

Wynyard离Launceston约150公里，往Devonport，然后Burnie，便可到达。在Burnie的时候要留意Table Cape的路牌，右转便到了。从Launceston到Table Cape大概要两小时的路程。入场费也相当的便宜，大人票10 AUD, 16 岁以下则2AUD. 更多详情可以到这里察看。

提醒一下，记得戴帽子和黑眼镜，最好就涂上防晒油，因为春天的太阳相当晒的。

Melbourne Museum - 墨尔本博物馆

我最喜欢的建筑,莫过于墨尔本的博物馆了。

这现代，又宏伟的建筑，是由澳州著名设计师Denton Corker Marshal所建。当年，建筑的设计赢得了国际比赛，在2000年隆重开张。

我第一次走在墨尔本的大街上，就被它宏伟的canopy吸引着。站在结构底下，让人觉得非常渺小。

坐落在博物馆正对面的Royal Exhibition Building，是非常出名的历史建筑。

Living Gallery 里充满花草树木。这些是象征原住民的树杆。

壮观，宏伟的建筑结构。

原住民博物馆。很可惜正在装修，我还没进过。

很喜欢这博物馆。只要带着学生卡，入场免费。要不然只要付10 AUD就可入场。非常值得。

Melbourne again

Few years ago I couldn't imagine myself walking on the street of Melbourne but I was strolling on the world's most livable city during my winter break.

1. New touch 'n' go bicycle renting system is implemented in Melbourne. One can just tap their card on the machine and take the bike which can be returned in any renting stations.

2. Performences in Federation Square.

3. Spiderweb bridge at the south of the CBD.

4. Panoramic view over the beautiful harbour.

Didn't take much photos of Melbourne during the trip as I spent my time mainly on exhibitions. Next up will be photos of museums and galleries in Mekbourne.

Mt. Field - venturing the wilderness

Been to Mt. Field long, long time ago (it had been few months back then). Camping in Mt. Field National Park was not intended but we did so due to unforeseen circumstances during the trip, and it was a long story.

Anyway, we did some camping in winter, and that was the biggest mistake I had made (but it was memorable and lots of fun). Never expect a city boy like me to camp on the freezing ground but I did. Despite Mt. Field was not planned in my itinerary, we had some great time venturing the forest in total darkness in pursuit of glow warm. Experience was fantastic when we walked in the forest with nothing but torch lights, holding everyone's shirt hoping no one would get lost. We saw the glow worms, it was nothing spectacular but the experience could not be describe by words. Every caution steps we took engraved deeply in the memories.

It was really freezing in the night and we had a camp fire by our tents. With beers in hand we sit closely next to each other and chat about 'first impression'. A pretty good way to enhance friendship. After that we headed back to tent only to find out that the tents were frosted. That explained the cold and I could hardly sleep through the cold, harsh winter night.

The next morning we venture the jungle again, to see the all-time famous waterfall.

and, the journey begins; not simply to the waterfall, but our journey as a student in an environment totally unfamiliar to us, and we have survived it, and will live it.

The creation of God that is the heritage for million of years. Amazing isn't it?

The mysterious, yet beautiful Horseshoe fall. I loved how the fall was hidden away from us, at a distant we could see but couldn't reach. The damp, dark surrounding added a sense of mystery that warned us not to get close to the fall or something bad were going to happen.

After that we left Mt. Field and headed back to Launceston. It was indeed a great trip and I wished to venture more of the national park next time.

MONA Artwork

Architecture in MONA is stunning and artworks are impressive, too, although I am not much of a arty person. The theme is interesting too, Sex and Death - a theme that will capture much attention. Architecture elements captured all my attention but I still managed to snap a few photos of the artworks.

1. Fatty Porsche. Not sure what the artist is trying to portrait but I think it has something to do with consumerism.

How cool the museum is? Pay a visit if you have a chance to see the best the museum has to offer.

MONA Hobart

It has been really awhile since my last update. Have been occupied with assignments that await submission next week. and Oh, I should be enjoying my spring break now but I guess Uni can't tell the definition of a break so I still have to rush for another submission after this.

Went to MONA quite some times ago. It was a newly built museum called Museum of Old and New Art. What is interesting about this building is that the whole building is built underground - not a common underground building, but uses the underground's rock formation as wall structure. The effect is mind-blowing and memorable.

We first started off the journey in Hobart. It is always exciting for us - the student staying in Launceston, to see the magnificent Mt. Wellington. It feels like we are being welcomed to Hobart.

Must go place in Hobart on Saturday - Salamanca Market. I have certainly visited the market many times yet never have enough of it. Visiting the market has always been an anticipation to those staying in Launceston.

We then drove to MONA, locating 15 minutes driving away from the city. This is a winery building that sells prestige wines. The architecture is simply simple yet beautiful. I love the way the building is composed of different materials and forms.

Entering the chalet through this threshold that feels like a 'hidden path'. The timber facade and the shrubs at the site provide a sense of buffer before entering the chalet.

Interesting balustrade made of rusted steel and lines in a pattern that will not obstruct the view. It is very interesting walking parallel to the balustrade as it will reveal solid and void view to the scenery. One of the most interesting balustrade that I have seen.

Glass hydraulic lift is used so there is not view-obstructing elements like counter-weight so views can be maximised.

Underground bedrock is retained and reinforced externally so it can be used as internal wall. Really interesting to look at and the tactility is certainly amazing. The irregular patterns on the bedrock is the art of the Museum itself.

Interesting staircases that span across the volume. The ambiguity is what makes the museum interesting.

Lastly, the dinning in the outdoor cafe is a treat before heading home.

A day in the snow

After spending two years here I had finally gone to Ben Lomond - the not-to-be missed attraction in Launceston. It is a snow mountain located south-east from Launceston, nearly an hour drive to the top. The journey up the mountain was spectacular but extremely hazardous. It is not recommended if you decide to drive up yourself without the proper gear and knowledge. One mistake and that could be the last mountain you ever seen. Hiring a coach is not expensive and you can check the information here.

1. I was really lucky to have blue sky and thick snow when I was there. The snow melted the day after.

2. Beautiful yet subtly-designed chalet on the mountain.

4. One of the fattest wombat I had ever seen.

8. The jump seems easy and fun but it was actually hard and painful when landed.

It could be my last visit to the mountain but the beauty, the laughter, and the fun we had will always be remembered.

A day in farm

It was a meaningful Saturday when I spent my day in a farm, helping to clean up the mess caused by devastating wind that teared a greenhouse of a friend's farm.

Spent my last 23 years in the city, it was my first time walking on a farm and did some work. David's farm is approximately 100 acres in size that keep sheep, cow, chickens, fruits and vegetable. He is now working on 'whole-farm planning' that encourages different activities to happen in the farm that benefits each other. For example, cow eat grass while its poo fertilize the grass; chicken pick up the pest that damage the plantation.

The day was really fun as we had the opportunity to stay close to the animals and helping to clean up the mess in the greenhouse. Then we spent some time in David's cozy home having tea. To our surprise, we were given the opportunity to design a farm house that promotes hospitality and farm production at the end of the day.

As for personal experience, it was my first time seeing ladyboys show. Before that, I was not convinced by the cabaret show as I didn't feel good seeing guys dressing in girl's. Since I was now here in Pattaya, I joined the show for the seek of joining - as a proof that I had been to Pattaya.

My perspective towards ladyboys show changed when I saw the amount of crowd before entering the theater. It was full with people! Then I was seated according to the ticket so there was no fighting-for-seat situation. The theater was small so every seat had good view to the stage. It was quite comfortable and exclusive.

8. The amount of detail the dancers put in their dance was amazing. Every shake of body, movement of hands were performed near to perfection despite the dancers were not an Indian.

One of my favourite, which was also the dance that made the floor hot. The modern Korean dance. A hot Korean babe walked out to the stage and danced exactly like those hottest Korean stars like Gina and SNSD.

9. Indeed pretty and totally changed my view towards 'ladyboys'

I was really impressed by the level of professional they had performed. The dancers performed superb and brought essence of each dance to its fullest. The comfortable environment and the sophisticated lighting and sound system made my night a memorable one. Alcazar is definitely highly recommended by me if you are looking for some positive entertainment in Pattaya.

Sex city - Pattaya City

Pattaya, an ordinary city located 200km South-East from Bangkok, is extraordinary. It is one of the most 'open' city in the world where sex is common and everywhere to be found. The city has a 3-kilometer beach that houses 2,000 accommodations of all types and 30,000 cafes. Prostitution takes place everywhere until the city is well known as sex city of South East Asian. The sex industry attracts millions of visitors each year and keep the industry running, and vice versa, despite the illegal/legal industry has caused more social problems and sex slaves issue than the money some people keep in their pocket.

Bangkok at dawn

An ordinary sunrise in Bangkok during weekday, a day when everyone was busying with their life and their agendas. As a tourist, I was enjoying a cup of tea on 14th floor of a hotel, while seeing the whole of Bangkok's cityscape. It was a beautiful scene but the sky was badly, badly polluted.

Nevertheless Bangkok is still a concrete jungle that is beautiful at its own.

9-day-road trip

Just back from a long, exhausting 9-day-road trip, starting from Hobart to Melbourne. Had some really great times with the closest gang in Tasmania, and awesome food in Melbourne. The trip was satisfying but tired.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport

One of the most aesthetically-pleasing airport that receives numerous architectural awards. A huge airport occupying large amount of land in Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi is one of my favourite airport.

1. The interior is bright and clean, as a cover for corruption during construction.

2. Really interesting light fittings to compliment the raw yet beautiful concrete slab.

3. Parts of the interior are raw and unfinished, which is not something everyone likes but I do.

4. Spider clamps and steel rods to replace the conventional bulky steel structure that holds the glass facade.

5. The details.

6. The giant steel trusses spanning across the whole terminal.

7. Details of structures and skylight. I was fascinated by the complexity of the structures that make the building interesting.

8. Use of canvas to bring in diffused daylight. However it was quit warm under the canvas, and the massive building has to be cold by air conditioning.

9. Commercial under the roof. The brightly lit interior makes the airport a comfortable space to chill.

Damnoen Saduak floating market, Bangkok

Damnoen Saduak floating market is definitely one of the highlight of the trip. Despite the modern concrete-and-glass jungle in the metropolitan Bangkok, the tradition and culture are well-preserved in the floating market. People used to trade on boat but the water village is now transformed into a tourism spot. The next time you are there, remember to bargain for 70% discount otherwise you are buying stuff that does not worth the value.

Overall it was a good experience to see Bangkok from another perspective - above water.

Long tailed boat powered by diesel engine can be used for the trip. However it is better to use the traditional boat to get a sense of the nostalgic feeling.

Recently I am quite into stories of Thailand, which gives me the motivation to post my trip to Bangkok and Pattaya early this year.

Thailand is a country that is just next to Malaysia where I am totally unfamiliar with; their culture, their politics, the people, and the stories that make up the country. There is one thing I know however - the active sex industry in Thailand that is renowned internationally.

Prostitution has been the first profession since civilization (although many arguements disagrees about it). This explains human's basic needs for sex and food, and also why sex industry exists even longer than Rome empire, and will continue exist until the end of humankind history.

Japan is one of the most sexually active country. Thailand is most likely the second in Asia, if not the whole world. The similarity between these two countries are; prostitution is not legal by law. However there are loop holes for such activities to exist and even perfected in every possible way to ensure its continue survival.
The industry is not clean, lots of human trafficking involved to become sex slave, even in developed country like Japan.

The difference are; in Japan, even the lowest class of prostitution takes place in say, a cleaner 3-star motel. In Thailand, you most likely wouldn't want to know about the lower class prostitution.

Recently I have watched a movie, Elephant White . The plot takes place in Thailand where an assassin is hired by a business man to kill his competitor. It's an action movie that involves stunts and coolest guns. The movie is not great as the plot is quite predictable, and the actions are nothing special. However the movie does bring out a message - the dark, dirty sex industry behind the colourful streets of Bangkok. How the girls are forced to be a prostitution, they have basically no rights, no life, no hope, and no tomorrow. That's the cruel fact behind the sexual industry.

There is also a heart-touching and sad video clip on youtube - Underage. It shows how the underage children involve in the industry, what they do and how they live. It is saddening to see the fact which is happening now, in this civilized world. These children have to prostitute themselves to survive, again the light of hope can never be seen in their life.

There is one Chinese saying, golden on the outside, rotten on the inside. This is how I would describe the sex industry of Thailand. I have no idea what it takes to make the situation better but I definitely hope it's not getting any worst in the future.

Amazing Thailand

Thailand is one of the country that holds strongly to their religion, Buddhism. So this is how I would like to start off with my Thailand trip.

I was visiting Thailand Chinese New Year. Joined a ground trip to visit Bangkok and Pattaya. It is one of the nearest country from Malaysia and yet I have never been too. After studying few years of architecture I guess it will be a good experience to study the buildings, street-scape, urban planning and lifestyle in Bangkok.

The first thing to realise was their religion. Monks were everywhere on the street to receive generous donation from the public. People would give food to the monks which would be collected to be shared by everyone.

Beautifully decorated Buddhism temples were all over the town. Some of the temples were so famous that attract people around the world to visit.

When it comes to praying, there is no such thing as old-fashion. It's the heart.

Milky way

The air in Maria Island is so clean and pollutant-free that every single star in the galaxy can be seen. Throughout the two nights I had seen a few shooting stars. Never had imagined seeing meteor and shooting stars so easily.

My first attempt shooting milky way. Not as good but acceptable. I had pushed to maximum of 30sec without remote shutter so this was the best I could get. Honestly I regret for not having a remote shutter when seeing the milky way for the first time of my life. Simply incredible.

That's the end of Maria Island. Now I can't wait to post about my trip in Thailand. Although it wasn't the best trip but nevertheless I had enjoyed it so far. Stay tuned.

Painted Cliff

I did not forget my blog, it was the assignment. 3 biggest submission in 7 days and I have one more to go. It's a never-ending-story.Exactly one week from today I will be a free man, lots of events in my mind waiting to be turned into a reality.

Anyway, I'll resume the pictures of Painted Cliff from Maria Island. It was a limestone formation mixed with iron hundreds of millions years ago, shaped by winds and sun. It was really an experience touching the rough texture of the cliff while enjoying the view to the open sea.

It was also a pleasure to shoot with my new Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. When it comes to landscape I have almost forgotten my Canon 17-55mm. The perspective on an ultra wide is really pleasant.

I have enjoyed my time shooting the incredible landscape, please enjoy the photos.

Wombat

Spotted lots of wildlife in Maria Island like groups of wild kangaroos, the nearly-extinct Cape Barren goose, wallabies, and wombats.

The longest zoom range in my arsenal is only 55mm (80mm on 1.5x cropped camera), so it was very hard for me to capture the moving animal. However I did manage to capture a cute wombat, and surprisingly, it stayed there even I was very close to him.

Mt. Bishop and Clark

During my first visit to Maria Island on 2009, I told myself that I would return to Maria Island again, and conquered the famous Bishop and Clark.

I have done it; returning to Maria Island and climbed to the peak of Bishop.

Mt. Bishop and Clark is one of the highlights of Maria Island. Standing 630 meters above sea level, it offers incredible views over Maria Island, Freycinet Nat Park, and Tasmania main land.

For a group of un-experienced hikers/students (who have minimal outdoor activities), it took us 5 hours for a return trip. It was my most extreme bush-walking experience although it is considered easy to someone. The long walk, climbing boulders ups and downs were killing me, especially when my sprained ankle was not fully recovered.

The views on the peak were in fact, spectacular. Imagine standing on top of the cliff where nothing above you; the whole Maria island, the main land, the pacific ocean, were all below your feet. The feeling was indeed incredible, despite sprained ankle and exhausted feet.

630 meters above sea level means it is 150 meters higher than KLCC - the tallest building in Malaysia and once the tallest building in the world. Climbing to the top was indeed an achievement.

1. Mt. Bishop and Clark was formed by earth crust movement from Triassic age, which was around 250 millions years ago.

2. The great plain was seen during the journey to the peak.

3. Fossil Cliff overlooking to Mt. Bishop and Clark.

4. The stiff, dangerous path to reach the peak. The photo simply does not justify the danger but the rocky cliff was really stiff. One fall and it might be the last mountain you ever climbed.

5. The view from 630 meters above sea level. The photo doesn't mean anything. You just have to be there to feel the magnificent.

6. These boulders were formed in Triassic age, it was really an experience standing above one of these.

7. At last, the sun painted the mountain with golden light.

8. The beautiful sunset ended our day in Maria Island.

Been there, done that. That's no way I would ever, ever climb this mountain again.

Maria Island is charmed by its untouched beauty. This is one of the most beautiful island, with plenty of white sandy shorelines for sunbathing, and cliff to conquer.

Went to Maria Island during Easter Trip. It was a great trip with awesome friends. 4 cars of 16 people were arranged for the trip. We started off early at 6am and it took a 3-hour of relaxing drive to Triabunna - the jetty for the Ferry that takes us to the island.

There were no supplied drinking water and electric so we had to camp, and to live like stone-age (except there were electric BBQ pits, solar-generated warm shower water). We had to prepare enough food for three days two nights trip, camps and tents for sleeping. It was not a bad experience for a first timer like me to sleep in the tent in cold Autumn night.

Went to Maria Island - my most favourite place in Tasmania, with a bunch of closest friends during last Easter break. First year in Master is really intense as we have been rushing for submissions before the break (that was why everyone had not enough sleep during the trip) and even after the break. It has been two weeks since I am back from the trip but I haven't have the time to even look at the photos, not until today.

Three more submissions in the next three weeks and it's going to be a crazy. For the moment, just enjoy the photos I have taken is a luxury.

The 100-year-old house that I am staying in has been my second house for quite some while. Small and cozy it has everyday I need for my daily routine. Ironically I have more equipments than the house in my country.

However it is not 'home' without families. Fortunately, having the chance to study in a small town means closer friendship. Here, I have everything I want and need, and a bunch of good friends sharing the same passion for architecture.

The afternoon is lovely, with warm sunlight and soft breeze brushes the skin. Despite it is not a 'home', it is still a comfortable space to stay until I accomplish my master degree.

Flood evacuation standby

Two days of continuous rain is enough to nearly break a 100-year record - the flood. It is nearly 100 years since the last major flood, measuring 7m off the ground. Yesterday, the water was rising abnormally high, and everyone who stay in low area was ready for a massive evacuation.

This means I had spent a night preparing for the first and worst flood in my life, moving valuable to friend's house and to higher ground while waiting for the air-raid siren to kick off.

It was really close but luckily God has mercy and not allowing water to flood into the city.

I am safe for now, but I can hear lots of helicopters flying above my roof to check the river which is only 100 meter away.

伍角船板

It is a highly decorated building, perhaps the most elaborated I have ever seen. I couldn't imagine architecture could turn out to be this, or perhaps, it is a big piece of art instead of architecture.

It is 伍角船板. Located in the heart of Taipei, this is a Chinese restaurant which tribute much to art. The whole concept is a sampan (flat bottomed Chinese wooden boat), a materials that can be found by the riverside like rotten plank and shells.

The 5-storey building is so dedicated to art that it has lost much space to decorations. The restaurant is low in efficiency but due to its 'art-chitecture', it attracts lots of people especially tourists to dine in. So it is making good business I suppose.

1. The exterior of the restaurant. Attractive enough to pull much attention off the main road.

2. Transitional space between the street and the main entrance.

3. Stairs that is highly detailed but most people claim that it feels fragile and insecure.

4. Part of the ground floor is used for pond that keeps beautiful fishes. Interesting enough but sacrifices much of the usable space.

5. Highly decorated columns.

6. Dinner space is spacious but again, not efficient. Distant between table to table is too great for a restaurant.

7. A 'unconventional' stairs.

8. Decoration of the dinner area. Each bowl and plate is hand-made by the staff.

A really unbelievable restaurant you will find in Taipei. Foods and prices are slightly above average but not expensive. Definitely worth a try. The ambient and environment is really good and you will be impressed by the effort and decoration of the building, whether you are in the field or not.

I was absolutely in mixed feeling when I saw this scene exactly a month ago; a place that did not belong to me, but I was familiar with. I had been roaming around the city leaving footprints and taking memories quite some times. I love the city, but somehow, it does not belong to me. Totally complicated feeling when seeing Melbourne at night, again.

There goes 2011 as I still have quite some while to spend here, in Australia. Very soon I will be leaving this place but I am going to miss every single moment that happens in the land down under.

My three and a half years of study in Australia is definitely something most precious, most memorable to me.

Finally made myself another photobook collection - an invitation down under. Featuring the best of 2010 captured in Tasmania, Melbourne, Sydney, and Narooma, it records the interesting and extremely beautiful places I have visited during my uni life, and definitely are memories worth of a lifetime.

Making a photobook is always better than photo-printing, despite it needs more time and effort to produce one. You get to customize the design, the layout, and the sizes of the photos. However it takes time to select, montage, and inserting the photos into the book.

Mine was printing by photobook malaysia at a reasonable price. It has 40% discount on all books and free upgrade to 190 gsm Photo Lustre Paper. Most of the time it takes only 5 working days for the book to be ready for collection, and I am impressed by the friendly customer service.

1. The matte front cover has a hint of exclusive, definitely something special for your creation.

2. A brief introduction as a start before folding into the content.

3. Images from your high resolution camera deserve to be printed in the high quality paper.

Test run Tokina 11-16mm f2.8

Had the pleasure to test run with the new Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 - the best wide-angle for me. Despite its image quality might not be as good as the superior Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5, but the wide aperture of f2.8 definitely makes a top choice for me.

The lens feels solid with its metal-like material on the body. It looks even more exclusive than my Canon 17-55mm f2.8 because the Canon is built with high-quality plastic. Tokina feels great in hand with its 540grams and looks relatively smaller compared to Canon 17-55mm.

It has big filter size of 77mm which again, makes the whole lens looks better. The original hood is great, definitely better than Canon (even genuine) hood which is made of plastic.

I am not a professional lens reviewer so I am judging the lens with my own experience, without lab testing and thorough data checking. The lens performs relatively well even with 11mm, corner sharpness is not a problem shooting at f8 onwards. Details are sharply presented but there are noticeable distortion (11mm is too wide to avoid distortion).

However there is a downside to this lens. It is relatively high in Chromatic Aberration. Purple lines can be seen on the edge of white surface but this is acceptable to me as I am not making 200-inch commercial prints. The glitch is too small and insignificant to be noticed.

Colours and sharpness are great and distortion is minimal.

People may dislike the glare but I actually love the effect.

If you have another 100 dollars to spare I would suggest you to get the Canon 10-22mm f3.5-4.5. It is always better to have the whole set of gears of the same brand. However the faster aperture of f2.8 is really a sweet spot that leaves me no regret getting it. A star from me.

太鲁阁国家公园, Taroko National Park is one of the seven national parks in Taiwan, perhaps the most significant and hazardous one with beautiful scenery. It was established in year 1937 by Governor of Taiwan and being used as a retreat from Chinese army during the world war II.

According to my tour guide, the cliff was established by rebellion Chinese army that retreated to Taiwan. They were attacked by the government army who intruded all the way from mainland. Having no chance of winning the rebellions were forced to hide in mountains, which is now known as Taroka National Park. The army aged between 15-50 were all forced to leave their homeland to a unfamiliar gorge and stayed there. The construction technology of cave opening was undeveloped; any wrong step could lead to serious death. Now who is willing to end his life worthlessly in an unknown jungle?

Today it is one of the most visited national park in Taiwan. Despite its magnificent scenery, the gorge is extremely hazardous. People were killed by falling rocks or collapsing cliffs in the past. On top of that, the gloomy environment is not making the gorge a comfortable place to stay long and admire. As a result, we were literally 'running' through the cliffs during our visit and praying hard that the cliff is not falling.

九份, literally it means nine shares. The village was started on a hilly site with only 9 families. Every time one of the family travel downhill for restock he will have to get 9 shares for the rest of the fellows, and that was how this village got its unique name, nine shares.

It has revolved from a nine-family village to one of the most interesting tourist spot in Taiwan. 九份 has the nostalgic feel of a rural village life.

One of the owner was making the local delicacy made of peanut under his dimly lit shop.

This is where the most important market is; surrounded tightly by two rounds of shops selling the best local delicacies and souvenirs and crowded with lots of people.

Although packed with people and traveling up to the village was lots of hassle, I love this place because of its nostalgic feeling of buildings and people were really friendly.

Attended a meeting with developer today as green consultant (I was just a follower in this regard), the project architect who came from a well-known architecture firm in KL, was presenting their proposal to the client. It was so frustrating to see the architect accepted every comment from the client without even defending his design. The clients happily criticized the facade, asking the architect to change according to their 'taste', the result was unattractive old-school-looking design that could be seen everywhere in town.

I mean, architect should accepts comments from client if it relates to budget and maintenance; in terms of aesthetic and design, we are trained to do what we are paid to do, should we follow blindly to client's comments and change to what they 'think' is nice?

"oh I don't like this, oh this looks better with this, that and this" I think this is one of the reason contributing to awful buildings in town. In this regards, architects have not done their job well enough to defending their architecture; instead, the untrained client looks more like an architect and build whatever they think is nice while the architect becomes just a space organizer.

This is my first time to learn about the term, business architecture, where architecture is just a business to make money. The architects will do everything, for better or for worst, as required by the client and receive their cheque. This is the easiest way for an architect to make money as he will spend lesser time doing the design hence more time for more projects. There are usually the architects who drive Porsche and Mercedes to work.

On the other hand, architecture business is about earning money from architecture. This means producing good architecture, good detailing, defending designs, and everything an architect needs to do for better architecture. However this is time consuming clients seldom appreciate this. These architects often drive a local-produced car and definitely earn lesser.

Is there a tomorrow in Malaysia's architecture? I don't know... Will I become a business architect? I don't know either...

Above statements are all my personal opinions. I might be wrong and it is not representing anyone and any field.

Rock Pool, Mystery Bay

Arrived Mystery bay to visit rock pool. As its name suggested, rock pools are rocky pools by oceans that are filled with seawater. Many of these pools exist as separate entities only at low tide. Often oysters and small fishes can be found in these 'aquarium'.

Millbay Boardwalk, Narooma - The best aquarium

It is said that the Millbay Boardway is the best aquarium experience. I could not believe that statement until I had witnessed the amazing marine life roaming freely under my foot.

One local told me that he saw a sleeping dolphin as he was swimming in the river. We were excited and jumped down into the freezing cold water. When I use the word 'freezing cold' and I mean it. It was unbelievable cold. Never except cold ocean could be 'that' cold. Imagine pouring yourself with a bucket of ice water.

We did not see any dolphin because non of us was dare enough to swim far. I am a good swimmer but the cold restrained me from swimming further. I felt that my body could cramp anytime.

We walked on the boardway on a wonderful dusk. The sky was turning gold above the horizon and it was extraordinary calm. At the moment, all hassle were gone as we were enjoying the fishes in the clear water.

The seaweed was the testimony of crystal clear water in Narooma.

It was absolutely amazing to see a wild sea lion playing on the water surface as if the water belonged to him.

The stingray appeared in the middle of nowhere and stunned all of us. Couldn't believe seeing a wild stingray on a boardwalk, not in the glass tube of an aquarium.

An very old bridge that gave a hint of vintage to the small town.

It was amazing to notice that the steel structure was homed to hundreds of pigeons. Each of them returned to their own home and fed their children. Amazing!

That was the end of Narooma. We did not even stay here for more than 24 hours due to the long and rushing journey to Melbourne.

This place is a heaven. It is too beautiful to believe. I wish that there will be a day when I can stay here longer and enjoy every juicy bit of Narooma.

It was the most beautiful town I had witnessed with my own eyes, Narooma, located along coastline of NSW, is a little coastal haven surrounded by world-class beaches and marine life.

It has the best dusk and dawn along the coastal horizon. The undisturbed marine life roam freely in the clear water, it is usual to spot dolphins and sea lion by the shore.

Tranquil is the word I would use to describe this small town of Narooma.

The water is so clear that you can even see what is biting your bait.

The Millway boardwalk.

Millbay boardwalk is said to be the best aquarium. How can a boardwalk become an aquarium? Stay tune for the next post as the secret of the river will be revealed.

National Museum of Australia, Canberra

One of the most innovation and information museum I have ever visited, National Museum of Australia has done a great job conveying the stories of Australia. The deconstruction architecture on the exterior promotes a dynamic and interesting approach to the mesuem. At the inside, the chaotic architecture continue generating curiosity and interest to explore further.

The national museum is different from Melbourne Museum and Sydney Museum that we have visited, it has more general history, including Australian animals and cultures, how Australia is established and etc. The interesting exhibits are accompanied by informative panels telling you the detail you need to know.

For those who like architecture and history, National Museum is always the place to visit.

Traveling two and a half hour from Sydney and we reached Canberra, the capital city of Australia. It was not much special to me, except it is quite similar to Putrajaya in Malaysia, this city is made to be the capital city. Enormous institutional buildings can be found everywhere, roads are much wider, lesser population and traffics. The city is planned according to axis and grid, it is very accessible and legible from every corner despite the fact this it is very quiet at night.

This was the ride we rented for our massive Sydney - Melbourne trip. The whole journey took us 1678 kilometers and the red Camry gave us a comfortable and safe journey. It was a pleasure to drive as it was responsive and stable, not to mention it looked mature and cool. It is no wonder why Toyota is the best selling model in US.

Three Sister Mountain, NSW

After a few days walking in Sydney downtown, we rented a car and drove to Three Sister Mountain. This was our first stop before driving all the way south to Melbourne.

It was a gloomy Wednesday, we got our red Toyota Camry and started our journey. The two hours drive was not a hassle with the guidance from our Garmin gps. Driving experience in Sydney town was terrifying, as the roads were narrow for a medium size car.

However we got to Blue Mountain region safely and enjoyed every second of our journey.

The Three Sister Mountain is named as Katoomba by the aboriginal.

We were in the cable car that went over Katoomba fall.

Three Sister Mountain is recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage site. It was once an important coal mine in the NSW region. Although the scenery is not as significant as those in Tasmania, it is still a must see site when you are traveling to Sydney.

Manly Island, Sydney

Manly Island is located north-east from the Sydney downtown. It is a residential island with beautiful beaches, a perfect place for those who live and enjoy at the same time. Although I was here for only an hour, the feeling was relax and enjoyable.

We were welcomed by a beautiful beach with crystal clear water when we arrived at the jetty.

Sydney Opera House, the icon of Australia

It was the building that I always wanted to witness with my own eyes since I was 10. I remembered sketching my very first building, I sketched her. I always liked her curve body lines with shinning white skin under the sun; I liked how she had been an icon for a nation for half a century. She, is Sydney Opera House.

Rhapsody of the Seas was stopping by the harbor.

A morning walk to the Opera House was light and easy.

The glazed Finnish tiles shone brightly under the Spring sun.

The RC structure of the building was a break-through during the 1960's. The Danish Architect, John Utzon and his engineer spent 3 years to investigate a way to make the structure stand. It was considered impossible but there it is, standing proudly in front every eye.

The magnificent RC structure was showcased in its interior.

The main auditorium that houses 5500 seats. It is considered as a medium sized hall but definitely one of the grandest.

Observation deck that was placed at a height similar to a captain's office in a vessel, overlooking the significant Harbor bridge and the ocean.

I am always fascinated by the power of Architecture being an icon of a nation. Sydney Opera House shapes the image of Sydney, if not the whole of Australia. Visitors travel here from everywhere around the world to witness its beauty, and of course, the touching story behind the reinforced concrete building.

It was a perfect day to witness the magnificent structure of the early 20th century. The Harbor bridge was built 90 years ago, and it is the biggest icon of Sydney until today.

1. On the way to Darling Harbor, this fountain features a series of surprises and attracts attention, making the surrounding extra happening.

2. Darling Harbor is the heart of urban life in Sydney. It provides a space for its citizen to breath and gather. Lots of activities can be found in this happening harbor; imagine enjoying a cup of icy cold ice-cream under the warm sun while letting the wind gently brushes on your skin.

3. The water feature outside Sydney Convention Centre is one of the most successful I have ever seen. It allows children to play and attracts large amount of crowd surrounding it. Anxious parents sitting beside the water feature while watching their children enjoying the water.

4. Simple system yet it involves a sophisticated urban activities. A great effort by the architect to make life for the huge buildings beside.

5. An old vessel stopping by the harbor that makes the city so picturesque.

Garden of Friendship, Sydney

This garden is built with the full reference of a traditional Chinese garden as a symbol of the friendship between China and Australia, therefore it is named as Garden of Friendship.

1. The green pond symbolize jade in the Chinese traditional. Admiring the man-made garden one will always feel relax and free.

2. Structure is an important element for Chinese garden. Unlike a traditional Japanese garden, man-made elements can often be seen in the Chinese garden.

3. It is about enjoying life sitting under the willow tree and observing the fishes swimming freely in the green pond.

5. However the garden can't hide the fact that it is located in the middle of the city, which means buildings can be seen everywhere around the garden. I do think that it is a good effort to build a traditional garden in Australia as an exchange culture.

It was a perfect morning with blue sky. As the sunlight touches gently on our skins, it was a perfect day to visit the city of Sydney, a perfect day for photographing the unfamiliar city.

1. Town Hall of Sydney with the shadow of a tree painted beautifully on the age-old stonewall.

2. St. Andrew Cathedral next to town hall. It houses one of the grandest pipe organ I have ever seen. We were fortunate enough to listen to the stunning music from this organ.

3. In a random lane way of the city. As mentioned, Australia has countless successful lane ways that become an interesting urban space. This lane way leads people to a open square that is sandwiched between buildings.

4. Victoria Market. One of the oldest shopping complex I have visited. As a typical building of the Victorian era, the building is highly decorated with colours and patterns.

5. China town in Sydney. It is very happening with foods and merchandises and is certainly better than the one in Melbourne.

The Rock, Sydney

Sydney Opera House, the greatest architecture of the 60's.

The Rock is where Sydney began. It exists since 19th century and is the oldest place in Sydney. It was once the poorest place where the rich abandoned due to disease, and it was the worst place to live. Most of the oldest buildings were demolished, only a handful of them survive.

Today it is one of the busiest tourist spot to visit, featuring the best pancake in town, the best coffee, the chocolates, cafes, and best memories. Walking along the Rock one will feel the charm of the street, as if time has traveled 200 years back. People are relaxing everywhere in the Rock, holding a glass of chilled beer or hot coffee, and chat the day off. The experience is indescribable, only those who has visited the Rock will have their only interpretation.

1. The location of this magnificent bridge marks the origin of Sydney here in the Rock.

2. Despite its location in the CBD, the Rock remains a peaceful street to retreat from the hassle and bustle of life.

3. Market that sells all kinds of souvenir, from lotions to wines.

4. One of the fortunate buildings that lasted for centuries. Today it is used as a boutique cafe that serves quality coffee and perfect environment for book writing.

Firstly I would really like to apologize for freezing this blog for more than a month. I am back now in Malaysia, and lot's of things have happened recently.
